The origin of tokkaebi is usually investigated from a historical and psychological perspective. As an alternative, this article suggests a semiotic perspective. From this perspective, the tokkaebi is regarded as a semiosis. In order to describe the dynamic effect of semiosis, I begin by analyzing various codes in the story world of tokkaebi tales. In the conclusion, I try to determine and describe the possible world of tokkaebi signs that is assumed as a genetic origin of the story world. In the possible world, there exist various tokkaebi signs that are not yet produced as story code. These signs appear as either concrete figures or abstract systems. Sometimes, they interact with one another in genetic processes. For example, in the possible world, there appear several Indexes and Icons that represent tokkaebi, and they are converted into Symbols through the process of conventionalization. It is assumed that such a possible world comes from the real world. This paper aims to describe the genetic process from the real world through the possible world into the story world by interpreting the texts of tokkaebi tales.
