This study aims to introduce and to have Jeju Onggi popularized and have it manufactured frequently through examining the structure of Dolgama(It is kiln made of stone), burnability, and the characteristic of Jeju Onggi, based on the understanding of the traditional form of production of Jeju Onggi, mode of expression, and Dolgama and establishments of the theories of Jeju Onggi.
Jeju Onggi is very different from that of the other local areas, and characteristically its appearance and type are very original. Even though Jeju Onggi has the unique forms, it has been frequently excluded from Korean traditional Onggi. There has been published any little study on the topic of Jeju's traditional pottery, and we can hardly find books of Jeju pottery, for which we have much difficulty understanding it thoroughly. Therefore it is important that systematic research is done on this topic to study Jeju Onggi. It can be recorded for future study.
In the past each step of production of Onggi was conducted in the different areas. There were divided labors for its manufacturing. There was Daejang( a person who makes ce7amics or onggi before they bake them in a kiln), Geonae( a person who helps the potter), the person who is in charge of baking the pottery, and the person who sell the products. People organized gye (bonding organization which consists of people who have the same purpose in the small village) in the unit of the village and produced Onggi using their own methods. This negatively impacted on the production of Jeju Onggi.
For the effective usage of Jeju Onggi, such divided labors must be abolished and all the manufacturing processess should be unified and conducted in one place. We should collect the scattered technologies for the systematic production of Jeju Onggi. For this the size of gama should be minimized and the latest construction techniques for gama and burnability should be utilized.
For completion of this thesis I took several steps as follows.
First, I examined Jeju Onggi's origin, its development, and the term. The origin of Jeju Onggi is assumed to be the latter half of the 17th century, when people used Mulhubeok( a jar for fetching water in Jeju), and not wooden bucket to fetch water. Mulhubeok was introduced from Jeolla Province, which is assumed to have the original technology. The terms related to Jeju Onggi are Gama, tools, construction, molding, burnability. This study aims to embody some terms and understanding of Jeju Onggi production. Currently the research of Jeju Onggi is not organized. Therefore I collected evidence from the potters who were engaged in making ceramics or pottery in the past. This will help you understand this thesis.
Next, I studied the various aesthetic values of Jeju Onggi, classifying the Onggi into Mulhhbeok, pot or jar, bottle, Siru( a jar for steaming rice cakes). The aesthetic quality of Jeju Onggi is found in every parts of Onggi, not in just one part. Jeju Onggi is different from that of other provinces in that it is made of Jeju own soil and natural resources(gama, burnability, materials for burning). The pattern on Jeju Onggi is diveded into three things, pattern expressing people's internal image, nature pattern, and the pattern which occurs by itself during the baking process.
The final purpose of this study is to have Jeju Onggi produced on a regular basis. I surveyed Guokri 'Seotgul Noranggul' in Seoquiposi Daejeongup where the original Onggi remained made I analyzed it into the potter's experiences, and then by myself made Dolgama for producing ceramics and pottery and studied the method of burnability.
I created final sketches of drawings from the analysis of the problems found in other Dolgamas. I then constructed a new Dolgama on its basis. I minimized the size of gama, materials and the structure. This was done do so that Jeju clay, baked at lower degrees, could be made into ceramics at higher degrees. I didn't make onggi using the natural slopes, and instead dug 1.5meter to make 'Busangzangi'(a kind of house for sheltering gama from the wind). This contributed to protecting the wind and supplying firewood. To report on my own gama's characteristics, I made 'Busang'( a room where we burn firewood)' and had the wall within gama untouched to the pottery or onggi. We made a burning room in the type of steps to minimize the problems during burning process, and I used durable materials for making the ceiling of the gama.
Jeju's soil is rich in iron. The reason why the color of the pottery is varied according to the heating degree. If we changed the method of burnability, we will get various pottery works. we can also produce Jeju own pottery, using Seompi(a bundle of branches) and Guzangidaksal(turban shell).
I produced various Jeju Onggies and put them on displayed. Since Jeju is increasingly becoming an international tourist attraction, we have to provide visitors with experiential tourism. In addition, we have to make an effort to develop the various tourism products. Keeping these aspects in mind, I tried to make Jeju Onggi an international tourism product, and at the same time analyzing the current Jeju products for tourists.
I will rediscover Jeju Onggi's value and its marketable possibility and will study the manufacturing technique and its real usage. I will attempt to make Jeju Onggi according to traditional contents and symbols. I hope that this research will give us the theoretic basis of aesthetic concepts and value.
