Modeling the government-supervised art exhibitions of Japan, the Joseon Art Exhibition was held every year from 1922 to 1944. It was the only governmentally organized public exhibition of Chosun. The exhibition began as a part of cultural ruling by Japanese colonists in the 1920s. The event inhibited Korean modern art from developing independently and reorganized into a colonial art. Seen differently, however, more intensive governmental control and ruling contributed to the implementation of a government-supervised art exhibition in Chosun. In contrast, such exhibitions had been long impossible in Japan because there had been severe conflicts and competition among artists of the nation over who to assume the authority and power of the state-controlled events. This study focuses on how the Chosun Art Exhibition became possible as a government-supervised event. More specifically, the study discusses how Japanese judges played a critical role in ensuring that the exhibition were held under supervision by the government. For this, the study looks into procedures through which those judges were selected and art judgements that they made. In association, this study also notes that at that time, more emphasis was put on moderate styles of art and efforts to unify artists were made by authorities concerned since unified artists under governmental authority and established standards of art were essential to the realization of government-supervised art exhibitions at that time. In conclusion, the Chosun Art Exhibition is a clear example to show how such state-controlled events could be realized. Thus, only keys to the realization were complete control and ruling by the powers of the state.
