This study is a case study about the death education, which is one of education programs for the elderly to prepare themselves for later life. The study was carried out to check how the elderly was changed as self empowered beings based on the transformative learning theory. The subjective of this study is two : 1) how is the learning activity of the death education carried out and what are their features during the activity? 2) Are there any changes in the understanding and the behavior of the elderly after the death education? if yes, what are the differences? The study was done with 11 persons at Welfare center of the elderly of A city. The study used the quality case study method which checked any change of the elderly who participated in the death education school that consisted of 12 times learning sessions.
Total 12 sessions of Death education program was divided into 4 periods. During the first period from 1st to 3rd session which was ice breaking time, the elderly students opened their mind and accepted others. During the second period from 4th to 6th session which was reflecting and emotion-sharing time, the elderly students admitted their past life and tried to forgive and reconcile themselves and others. During the third period from 7th to 10th session which was actual death preparation time, the elderly students prepared themselves for inheritance and funeral. During the final period from 11th to 12th session which was the time for hope and future, the elderly students set up new plan for future life. Every change and experience of the elderly student is described in the study.
As the result of this death education, there was a clear change in the understanding of the elderly about the death. The elderly accepted the death and had right attitude to the death, which helped them establish themselves as empowered ego, and in the end they could more actively and positively participate in the society they belonged to. The education for the elderly should change not only their point of view about the death and their perspective to the life but also their behavior, so this death education made the educated elderly dedicated themselves to the society so eventually they were interested in volunteer activity.
This study found out the transformative process of the perspective of the elderly was achieved step by step. They experienced the life crisis during the first step, reflected themselves during the second step, evaluated themselves in a critical way about their negative attitude to the death during the third step, admitted themselves during the fourth step, tried to find out many alternatives of new roles, relationships, and behaviors during fifth step, and reunified themselves during the sixth and last step.
Finally, it was suggested for the future study that the optimized program of the death education should be developed for the changed social understanding about the death education, and for individual requirement. Also the experts and specialists should be trained and educated to develop and carry out the program and furthermore the death education should be implemented in terms of lifelong education.
