This dissertation explores the articulation of infinity through the networked formation of aesthetic objects in art, grounded in the philosophical, sociological, and mathematical frameworks of Graham Harman, Bruno Latour, and Alain Badiou. It offers an in-depth analysis of the author's artworks, with a particular emphasis on the genesis of aesthetic objects and their ecological interplay with surrounding environments. The study meticulously examines the dynamic interactions and constructions of elements such as text and image, play and repetition, and event and void within the author's oeuvre. By doing so, it seeks to illuminate the intricate processes through which these elements coalesce to manifest the concept of infinity in artistic practice.
This thesis also undertakes a comparative analysis of the works of American installation artists Sarah Sze and British environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy, alongside the French painter Pierre Soulages, to offer a comprehensive examination of the author's installation and planar works. By juxtaposing these artists' methodologies and aesthetic principles, the study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the author's creative processes and the conceptual underpinnings of their art.
Aesthetic objects are understood not merely as simple entities but as intricate constructs that can be comprehended through Graham Harman's Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO). According to this framework, these objects possess an inherent vitality, engaging in interactions with both human and non-human elements. Harman asserts that objects have their own intrinsic reality, which can be fully grasped only through their interrelations. This ontological perspective implies that artworks transcend their physical manifestations, functioning as organic processes that dynamically interact with and transform within the environments they occupy.
Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and ecological network theories are pivotal in contemporary discourse. Latour meticulously examines the intricate web of relationships between objects, humans, and non-human actors, positing that these networks are perpetually in flux rather than static constructs. Consequently, artworks can be reinterpreted as dynamic entities, continuously evolving through time. Within this framework, artistic creations are seen as ephemeral and organic, undergoing incessant cycles of formation, disintegration, and regeneration within the spatiotemporal continuum. This conceptualization underscores that artworks transcend mere physicality, embodying dynamic entities that are incessantly reconstituted and revitalized through the processes of creation and dissolution.
Alain Badiou, in his seminal work ‘Being and Event’ explicates ontology through mathematical concepts, particularly set theory. He posits that existence is not a unified entity but a multiplicity of diverse elements. Badiou asserts that through events, new existences emerge, signifying radical changes that transcend existing structures. Post-event, individuals commit to the event and follow its truth. Badiou contends that existence is never complete; it includes voids and lacks, which provide the potential for new events. Thus, according to Badiou, existence is an infinite concept that is continuously changing and reconstituting through multiplicity, events, truth, and voids.
Aesthetic objects are understood through Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) and Actor-Network Theory (ANT) as entities that interact with both human and non-human actors. Badiou's perspective of existence as a continuously evolving concept through multiplicity and events complements this understanding. Additionally, artworks are dynamic entities possessing vitality, transcending their physical forms through processes of creation and dissolution across time and space. Consequently, this research endeavors to newly comprehend the infinite possibilities of artworks and their networks through such analysis.
