Ultrasonic Micro Burnishing Technology (UMBT), which is micro cold forging on to the surface of 3D sculptured surface of mold and dies using ultrasonic energy, has been developed. Using UMBT surface roughness(Ra) of 5.2 after milling was improved to 0.3 for SKD11. The process time can be reduced significantly compared to conventional technology, while energy consumption is less than 1.5 kW. The wear rate of ceramic tool tip, for instance, was low enough to be ignored practically in most cases of UMB. In addition, UMB, a chipless and almost coolant free process, can be viewed as eco-material processing. The schematic diagram for 3D sculptured surface by 3 axes UMBT treatment and by 5 axes UMB treatment is presented. Results of 3 axes UMB treatment are presented with technical data.
