(Multilingual Abstract)

Anti-Japanese Women Warriors is a book edited and published by the Women's Association, Korean Autonomy District, Yanbian, China in 1984. In this book, the authors dealt with the glorious activities of 20 Korean women who participated in the Chinese Communist Party, sacrificing their lives during an anti-Japanese armed struggle. Although this book has some drawbacks as historical material, it becomes an object of study in the sense that we can see the aspects and the characteristics of anti-Japanese movements employed by Korean communist women in China. In addition to the above book, two books are more analyzed for the study : one is Anti-Japanese Warriors of Mt. Jangbaik, and the other is Immortal Anti-Japanese Warriors. Both Books were published in the 1980s in Manchuria, China.
Most of women warriors had not received a formal education, - coming form poor agricultural families, - and were influenced by relatives or night school reachers who filled them with communist idealogy. The objectives of the anti-Japanese Communist fighting were antiimperialism and antifeudallisim. Because these objectives contained a logic by which equality between men and women, women's liberation, could be achieved, they contributed much to the enhancement of women's consciousness and the development of an active women's enlightenment movement.
These women's roles were tow. One was to enlighten women's consciousness and develop revolutionary communist thoughts as leaders of women's association or work groups for children. The other was to participate directly in anti-Japanese combat. The anti-Japanese armed struggle of this period was mainly guerrilla warfares. In order to succeed in long-term guerilla warfare, food and clothes had to be supplied, of course. Therefore, fighting forces were always accompanied by accompanied by cooking as well as sewing units, which consisted of women. These women warriors prepared food, washed, and sewed clothes. In addition to these activities, they were also in charge of firet aid, and of the distribution of leaflets.
Those with strong combat abilities carried machine guns on their shoulders. Some achieved glorious victories, and one of them later became a woman general. However, the women general worked in cooking and sewing units during noncombat periods. Ironically, cooking and sewing were the traditional roles of women even there.
From these events, we can see that traditional women's roles were absorbed into the combat forces. This means that the roles of women were extended from inside the home to outside the home, to society. We must recognize the fact that women fought together with men in the combat units, and also lodged and boarded with them. These fighting spirit and the activities of women warriors, certainly played vital roles in changing the traditional consciousness of women themselves, as well as men, concerning the status and roles of women.
