Adrienne Rich, a representative American feminist poet of the late twentieth century, has developed women's identity, the conception of ideal Society by using poetry. There is a difference with other feminist writers in that she has suggested that we should choose a few alternatives against Patriarchal world. The power of her own has a stem from her desire to change the world and survive. In short, Adrienne Rich has written poetry in order to recover the social positions of women who have been historically oppressed by patriarchy, express their common experiences, and restore their lost identity.
This study has three chapters for her levels, which enables us know clearly because Rich announced her opinion or strategies in public or in using poetry. Her power by using poems has increased unceasingly, so that she is a political poet in America recently.
For the first thing, in her earlier poetry(mostly focused on 1960's poetry), she had wondered why all the women didn't have a quest their duty, unable to know their identity. Therefore, she tried to let them realize their lost identity. Moreover, she wanted them neither to love men nor be dependant on males. She insisted that we go through the door of realization. She expressed that if women do not go through the door, it is possible to maintain the father's world. However, old myths for women to give births to sons and to raise them will continue to exist to order women to own sacrifice. In such a respect, she had to have a patience to get over her inner conflict about what she should choose between her own desires for writing and her family members' ones for her. At last, she has a need to break down dominant language which support patriarchal realities based upon a woman-oppressed ideology and to make a new language between women.
Secondly, She had an effort to have a band with other women who had had the same suffer or experience under the father's world. In her works, ones depicting lesbian can be from late 1970's to early 1980's. Rich has tried to define the term, lesbian not to be negative thing something like crimes. She has sharp opinion that patriarchal had thought lesbianism of crimes because it has prevented the father's world from surviving.
As time passes, she had emphasized women's mutual relationship as well as a lesbian continuum, which includes all women's positive connections. Rich has believed that her conception about lesbian can pull out the root of male power such as illiberal heterosexuality.
At third, she has a quest that her lesbian conception for ideal society can be factional, arbitrary, and destructive being. In those reasons, she has recently claimed that we should seek the peaceful world how women and men should coexist harmoniously against mechanical civilization. Her ultimate purpose to write is to live all together in this world, that is to make public's happiness. Futhermore, we should not be oppressed by some reasons such as sex, class, colors and region.
This study, has a focus on how Rich's idea for ideal society has changed by some periods. Moreover, the most important purpose of that is to examine the possibility about whether we can come true the community as an ideal society.
