포스트소비에트 카자흐스탄의 2차 세계대전 기념물 -다르게 말하기와 기억의 조작 사이에서 = World War ll Monuments in Post-Soviet Kazakhstan: Between Telling Otherwise and the Manipulation of Memory

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목적은 리쾨르의 실천적 차원에서의 기억의 실행 개념에 의거하여 포스트소비에트 카자흐스탄에 건립된 2차 세계대전 기념물의 사회정치적 역할과 의미를 논의하는 것이다. 이들 기념물은 주로 에스닉 카자흐인을 형상화하고 있으며 소비에트 전쟁 기념물의 그것과 상이한 조형성을 나타내고 있다는 점에서 일종의 ‘다르게 말하기’를 실행하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 이는 리쾨르가 제시한 타인에게 그 자신의 경험과 기억을 말하게 하기라는 ‘다르게 말하기’ 개념과는 다르다. 한편 이들 기념물이 승전에 기여한 이들로 에스닉 카자흐만을 재현하고 있으며 역사적 사실과 부합하지 않는 방식으로 형상화되었다는 점은 이들 기념물이 ‘기억의 조작’ 또한 실행하고 있음을 말해준다. 이처럼 이들 기념물 건립을 통한 기억의 실행은 ‘다르게 말하기’와 ‘기억의 조작’의 성격을 모두 나타내는데, 이는 기념물 제작을 주도하고 있는 정권의 국가 중심적 사고에서 비롯된 것이라고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this article is to discuss the sociopolitical roles and meanings of World War II monuments built in post-Soviet Kazakhstan based on Paul Ricoeur’s conception of the exercise of memory on the practical level. It could be said that theses monuments are exercising a sort of ‘telling otherwise’ in that they are mainly giving shape to ethnic Kazakhs and are showing formativeness quite divergent from that of Soviet war monuments. But this ‘telling otherwise’ is different from the conception of ‘telling otherwise’ presented by Ricoeur as letting others tell their own experience and memory. Meanwhile that these monuments are representing only ethnic Kazakhs as the ones who contributed to victory in war and are given shape out of accordance with historical facts is telling that these monuments are also exercising the ‘manipulation of memory.’ It could be said that in this way the exercise of memory through the construction of these monuments assumes the character of both ‘telling otherwise’ and the ‘manipulation of memory’, which stems from state-centric thinking of the regime that is taking the lead in producing monuments.
