The purpose of this paper is to analyze the participation motives and satisfaction level of participants of sports programs in University-run Life Education Centers. To this end, a total of 203 questionnaires were selected using convenient sampling on 240 participants in sports programs of four University-run Life Education Centers in Seoul. The questionnaires completed were collected and the ones that lack data or reliability were excluded from analysis. Only the meaningful questionnaires were input into the computer for frequencies analysis, reliability validation, and One-way ANOVA using SPSS 12.0 windows program. The results and conclusion of this paper is as follows.
Firstly, the results of the participation motives in sports program of University-operated Life Education Center by gender show that the participation motives of male and female are similar. The participation motives by age reveal that participants aged 51-60 have the highest goal-oriented motives and those aged 20-30 have the highest scholarly achievement motives for participation. By educational background, the participants with the highest goal-oriented motives are those who high school graduates and those with the highest activity-oriented motivation are those who graduated from graduate school. Participation motives by annual salary show that the people with the highest goal-oriented motive are those with salary of 20million won or less and the participants with the highest activity-oriented and scholarly achievement motives are those with salary of 30 million to 40 million won. As for the sports program participation motive by marital status, there are more married people than single people with activity-oriented participation motives while there are more single people than married people with scholarly achievement motives. It was found that in terms of motives for participating pursuant to experience in educational program of other institutions, those that have been in other educational programs have more goal-oriented, activity-oriented, and scholarly achievement motives.
Secondly, the results of the satisfaction level of participants in University-run Life Education Center’s sports programs per demographic characteristics show that there is little difference in satisfaction level for male and female. As for the satisfaction level by age, the youth and senior citizens have the highest satisfaction level. Those aged 61 or above have the highest facility satisfaction level. Satisfaction level by educational background conveys that those that graduated from graduate school have the lowest satisfaction level of the use of facility. As for the satisfaction level by annual salary, results show that those with annual salary of 20 million won or less have the highest level of satisfaction in curriculum, instructors, and methodology. Satisfaction level by marital status reveals that single people have the highest satisfaction level in curriculum and use. Also, in terms of satisfaction level depending on whether the respondent participated in other educational programs, those without previous experience in other institution’s program have a higher satisfaction level in curriculum and use.
Thirdly, the conclusion of the correlation between satisfaction level and the participation motives of participants of sports programs in University-operated Life Education Centers is the following. The satisfaction level differed depending on whether the participant’s participation motive was goal-oriented, activity oriented or for scholarly achievement. The participation motive for most of the people who responded that they were satisfied with the curriculum is for scholarly achievement and the participation motive for most of the respondent who were satisfied with the instructor is also scholarly achievement. In addition, the participation motivation for most of the people who were satisfied with the education methodology is goal-oriented. Meanwhile, only a few people who responded that they were satisfied with the use and the facility reveal that they have participated in the program for the activity.
The relationship between the participation motive and satisfaction level of the participants of sports program in University-run Life Education Centers show that the higher the motivation, the higher the satisfaction level.
Therefore, there should be studies on ways to improve satisfaction of the curriculum, instructors, teaching methodology, the use and educational facility by taking in account the program participants’ goal-oriented, activity-oriented, and scholarly achievement motives. The results of this paper are expected to be used as a foundation data for analyzing the participation motives and satisfaction level of sports program in Life Education Centers operated by Universities.
