베토벤의 《현악 4중주 Op. 18, No. 1》 1악장 판본 연구에 대한 비판적 고찰 = A Critical Review of Research on the Two Versions of Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 18, No. 1, First Movement

국문 초록 (Abstract)

베토벤(Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827)의 《현악 4중주 Op. 18》은 아멘다 버전(Amenda version, 1799)과 출판본(Final version, 1801)이 모두 독립된 완성본의 형태로 남아있어 완성본과 완성본 사이의 변화를 파악할 수 있게 한다. 이에 두 완성본의 차이에 대한 중립적인 비교를 넘어 우열에 대한 가치 평가가 가능함을 주장하는 학자들까지 등장하기 시작하면서, 이후 《현악4중주 Op. 18》은 논쟁의 중심에 서게 되었다.
1982년 음악학자 재닛 레비(Janet Muriel Levy, 1938-2004)에 의해 저술된 Beethoven’s Compositional Choices: The Two Versions of Opus 18, No. 1, First Movement은 ‘아멘다 버전은 열등한 작품이다’이라는 명제를 남겼고 이후 이를 토대로 한 후속 연구 및 다양한 논쟁을 이어지게 했다. 그러나 레비의 저술은 아멘다 버전이 출판본보다 열등하며, 아멘다 버전 이후의 출판본이 ‘수정’이 아닌 ‘개선’이라는 관점 위에 이루어진 것으로서, 이는 두 버전이 추구하고 있는 각기 다른 음악적인 목표를 고려하지 못한 전제라 할 수 있다.
이에 본 연구의 목표는 출판본이 더 우세하다는 기존 학계의 통념 및 고정관념에서 벗어나 ‘새로운 관점’을 통해 두 개의 버전을 ‘동등한 관계’로 전제함으로써 레비의 연구를 비판적으로 고찰하는 것이다. 이를 통해 《현악 4중주 Op. 18, No. 1》의 두 버전의 차이가 ‘우열’보다는 ‘다름’에 의거함을 객관적으로 검토하고, 아멘다 버전이 주체적이고 독립적인 작품으로 기능할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

String Quartet Op. 18, No. 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827) exists in two independent completed versions: the Amenda version(1799) and the Final version(1801), allowing for an understanding of the changes between the two versions. With scholars claiming that it was possible to evaluate the value of each version at a level beyond neutral comparison, String Quartet Op. 18, No. 1 became the center of debate. Beethoven’s Compositional Choices: The Two Versions of Opus 18, No. 1, First Movement, written by the musicologist Janet Muriel Levy(1938-2004) in 1982, left the proposition that the Amend version was inferior to the Final version. This stimulated follow-up research and various related discussions. However, Levy’s work did not take into account the different musical goals pursued by each version as it was based on the perspective that the Final version was not a “revision” but an “improvement.”
This study critically examines Levy's research by adopting a “new perspective” on the two versions and presuming them to be in an “equal relationship,” deviating from the academic community’s conventional view that the Final version is superior. Through this approach, it objectively reviews the two versions of String Quartet Op. 18, No. 1 not based on a hierarchical evaluation but on the premise of “difference,” and suggests the possibility that the Amenda version can function as an independent work by itself.
