The cutaneous reactions of adhesive and Scotch tapes were investigated on the back of healtby medical and nursing students. There were used 6 kinds of the ordinary adhesive tapes, 5 kinds of allegedly hypoallergenic adhesive tapes and 5 kinds of Scotch tapes, ell having been used as is. The tapes were removed 2 days later and the eruptions were scaled by the criteria of Fisher. Two days after the test the positive skin reactions were observed in 5-21% and 7-10% among the students tested with adhesive and Scotch tapes respectively, while 4 days after the test the positive reactions were seen in 1-9% and 2-5% res pectively. There was no students showing the vesicular eruption on the test site. There were no significant differences in skin reaction rates between the ordinary and the allegedly hypoallergenic adhesive tapes. Taking the pattern, reaction time and duration of skin eruptions, snd the histopathologic findings comprehensively into consideration, the skin eruptions observed in our study were considered to occur mainly by irritation rather than the true allergic sensitization.
