Spin-based electronics (spintronics) leverages the intrinsic angular momentum of electrons to enable low-power and high-speed data storage and processing. A cornerstone of this technology is the efficient generation and manipulation of spin–orbit torques (SOTs) in magnetic heterostructures. Traditionally, SOTs have been attributed to spin currents generated via the spin Hall effect (SHE) in heavy nonmagnetic metals. However, recent theoretical and experimental advances have revealed that interfacial effects and orbital angular momentum (OAM) can also play a decisive role in torque generation, challenging the conventional SHE-dominant picture.
This dissertation investigates three distinct phenomena that challenge and expand the conventional framework of spin Hall-mediated torque generation. First, it demonstrates the emergence of exceptionally large field-like torque (FLT) in Pd/Co bilayers, enabled by strong interfacial spin–orbit coupling (ISOC). Comprehensive spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) and harmonic Hall measurements reveal that the FLT in Pd/Co not only exceeds that in comparable Pd/CoFe or Pd/Py systems but even surpasses the corresponding damping-like torque (DLT). Micromagnetic simulations further confirm that this large FLT significantly accelerates magnetization switching, underscoring the importance of interfacial engineering in high-speed spintronic applications.
Second, the dissertation presents a systematic investigation of the orbital Hall effect (OHE) as a novel and tunable source of SOT. By varying the SOC strength in nonmagnetic metals (W, Ti, Cr, Hf, Re) and the orbital-to-spin conversion efficiency in ferromagnets (FeB, CoFeB, Ni), this work disentangles the spin and orbital contributions to the net torque. Notably, Ni-based systems with high OAM retention and large conversion efficiency exhibit sign reversals and torque enhancement, indicating orbital torque (OT) dominance. The experimental findings, including the effect of ultrathin W insertions, show that the relative contributions of OHE and SHE can be modulated at sub-nanometer precision—offering a powerful route for designing energy-efficient and functionally adaptable spintronic devices. These insights are supported by detailed experimental validation in Chapter 5, which emphasizes the SOC dependence of the OHE-to-SHE torque balance.
Finally, the dissertation extends the study of SOT-induced dynamics to ferrimagnetic systems. Using GdFeCo as a model rare-earth/transition-metal ferrimagnet, the excitation of perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW) modes is demonstrated via ST-FMR in AuPt/GdFeCo heterostructures. A key finding is that introducing an antioxidant Ta capping layer enables the observation of multiple higher-order spin wave modes by preserving the magnetic integrity of the FiM interface. This result highlights how interfacial and capping-layer conditions critically influence high-frequency magnetic excitations and, consequently, the performance of sub-THz spintronic and logic devices based on FiMs.
Collectively, this work provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and engineering spin–orbit torques through interfacial effects, orbital physics, and magnetic damping control. It establishes that beyond conventional spin-current-driven mechanisms, orbital contributions, interfacial hybridization, and material structure play critical roles in defining torque magnitude and symmetry. These findings offer new strategies for tailoring spintronic device performance in terms of efficiency, speed, and functional versatility.
