수원 만세시위의 양상과 특징 = Features and Characteristics of the Suweon area protests during the March 1st Movement

Examined in this article are the Manse protests that took place in the Su’weon area during late March and early April 1919, when the Manse protests and the March 1st movement itself reached its peak. Activities in Su’weon are reviewed here in terms of leaders, methods, and how they were suppressed by the Colonial authorities.
In Su’weon, Manse protests actively took place since its beginning during mid-March, and escalated till it reached its peak in late March, early April. In Seong’ho-myeon Osan-ri, Songsan-myeon Sagang-ri, Hyangnam-myeon Bal’an-ri, Jang’an-myeon Suchon-ri, and Wujeong-myeon Hwasu-ri, the Joseon people attacked Myeon centers, administrative offices(Jujae-so), postal offices and shops run by Japanese, even set fire on them, and killed Japanese police.
The March 1st movement in Su’weon vividly shows us how a peaceful action that began on March 1st 1919 gradually turned into violent activism later on. With the Manse protests gaining momentum, people who had been serving at the very bottom of colonial ruling, like Myeonjang figures, clerks at the Myeon offices and even minor Gujang figures all began to plan violent attacks on whatever they found as colonial targets. In response to all these attacks, arsons and killings, the Joseon Governor General office retaliated with bloody retribution, which also led to the Je’am-ri massacre.
