A submerged MBR(membrane bioreactor) process consists of a bloreactor and membrane which replaces the conventional clarifier of an activated sludge process. Since the suspended solids are totally eliminated through membrane system, the settleability of sludge has absolutely no effect on the quality of the treated water. A long enough sludge retention time(SRT) provides higher sludge digestion in MBR process. The high concentrations of the sludges create a favorable environment for "endogenous" denitrification, thereby ensuring the efficient removal of nitrogen. A submerged MBR process can reduce overall treatment plant area, therefore, this process has the potential to be applied to small wastewater treatment plants that need low cost treatment systems.
