An Analytical Framework for Identifying the Location of an International Airport

The location of the airport should be determined based on a comprehensive understanding because there are various impacts of airport construction on regional economies. However, the literature shows that few attempts have been made to specifically analyze the impacts of airport construction on national and regional economies. This paper attempts to present a framework for analyzing the impacts of an international airport on national and regional economies. The proposed framework consists of 4 parts as follows: i) an increase in local employment from the operation of the airport, ii) an export-import boost due to improvement of accessibility, iii) a boost in investment and consumption, and iv) an increase in foreign visitors. The paper applies the framework to hypothetical data and specifically shows the impacts of the international airport nationally and regionally. Based on the results obtained, this paper suggests a direction for the determination of international airport location.
