$quot;Mysticism$quot; is not a fully satisfactory subject. The subject has been used in different senses. Therefore, those who use it are bound in self-defence to make clear what they mean by it. I understand it to be the name of the mystic life process - the Mystic Way.
The Mystic Way is divided into three Ways: the Way of Purgation, the Way of Illumination and the Way of Unity. The Way of Purgation is the growth of the germ of the mystical consciousness the Way of Illumination is the growth of the sprouted mystical consciousness the Way of Unity is the fruition of the mystical consciousness.
This Mystic Way forms the hidden structure of Eliot's poetic drama. While the speakers of Eliot's poetry are possible zones of the poet's consciousness, the protagonists of his poetic drama are the mystics - the social mystics who tread the Mystic Way on the stage.
According to Eliot's view of art, the function of art is to bring us towards the summit of the Mystic Way. Eliot as a dramatist has attempted to make the social usefulness of mysticism. The theatre is the ideal medium for mysticism, in his mind, and the direct social usefulness for mysticism.
