This paper discusses some implications of youth participatory action research (YPAR) for engaged and transformative civic education. In YPAR, youth participate in knowledge production as co-researchers, investigate various issues of social justice and discrimination that affect their everyday lives, and also take action for social change. Being used especially in projects involving historically marginalized youth in the U.S., YPAR helps youth researchers cultivate a wide range of academic skills, such as literacy skills and analytic and critical thinking skills, as well as develop a critical consciousness of societal issues. Three major aspects of YPAR-social justice and anti-racism, praxis-based pedagogy, and holistic and ecological approach-are highlighted as especially relevant to engaged and transformative civic education. A particular case of YPAR is introduced as an example. This paper also argues for broadening civic education research to include diverse and situated civic practices taking place in various settings in the community. Such an expansion can contribute to the preparation for critical and engaged citizens who respect and practice the pluralistic ideals in a democratic society.
