유학생 관점에서 바라본 학교 밖 소속감에 관한 건강지리학적 연구 = A Health Geographical Study on a Sense of Belonging in the Outside of University from a Perspective of International Students

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Although a sense of belonging based on the living environment is emphasized in mental health care for immigrants and refugees, the sense of belonging among international students in Korea tends to be replaced by another place instead of universities and shows the distinction from the mainstream of previous research.
Hence, the purpose of this study is to find out the reason why the sense of belonging is replaced in the outside of universities from the perspective of international students and to discuss the alternative that international students with citizenship settle down in society. The results of this study rely on in-depth and semi-structured interviews conducted with Vietnamese international students from April to June 2022. The main results can be summarized as follows: first, affective encounters in universities are superficial or short-term and are insufficient to create the sense of belonging; also, evasive propensities such as preliminary blocking of relationships by rumors, individualism, economic burden, and lack of centrality result in the self-denial of the sense of belonging. Second, it does not seem to stimulate the formation of the sense of belonging because there are a wide range of means to replace mutual exchange based on ethnicity, for example, human networks already existed before entering universities, friends or relatives, existence of official support measures already deeply rooted in the Korean society. Lastly, it is judged that active or receptive attitudes and longing for Korean culture, which was already developed in Vietnam, various cultural environments experienced as global citizens, and exchange in the world via information and communication technology weaken the sense of belonging regarding the same sentiments and hinder the connection with the landscapes of mind.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

비록 이민자, 난민 등 정신건강에 있어 생활환경에 기반한 소속감은 강조되고 있음에도 불구하고, 우리나라 유학생의소속감은 학교가 아닌 다른 곳으로 대체되는 경향이 있어 주류 연구와 차별적 현상을 보인다. 이에 본 연구는 유학생 관점에서왜 학교 밖에서 소속감이 재배치되는지 그 이유에 대해 알아보며, 그들이 한 사회에서 온전한 시민권을 가진 주체로서 자리를잡기 위한 방안에 대해 논하고자 한다. 연구의 결과는 2022년 4월부터 6월까지 베트남 학생을 대상으로 수행한 심층 및 반구조화 인터뷰를 토대로 내용분석을 거친 것이다. 연구의 주요 내용은 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 유학생에게 학교에서의 동정적 만남은 소속감을 형성하기에 충분하지 않은 표면적이거나, 단기적인 것이며, 소문에 의한 관계의 사전 차단, 개인주의, 경제적 부담, 구심점 부재 등 회피적 성향이 소속감에 대한 스스로의 거부라는 결과를 낳고 있는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 둘째, 학교 내 민족적 소속감에 의지한 상호교류를 대신할 수 있는 방안, 예를 들어 입학 전 형성된 인간관계, 이미 한국 사회에 존재하고 있는 교우 혹은 친인척 존재, 공식적 지원책의 존재 등이 깊이 뿌리내리고 있어 학교를 중심으로 하는 소속감 형성을 크게 자극하지 못하는 것으로 보인다. 마지막으로 베트남에서부터 가지고 있던 한국문화의 적극적인 수용적 태도와 동경, 세계시민으로서 경험하고 있는 다양한 문화적 환경의 존재, 정보통신을 통한 전지구적 교류 등이 동일 정서에 바탕을 둔소속감의 필요성을 둔화시키며, 심상의 경관과 연결되는 것을 저해하는 요인이 되는 것으로 판단된다.
