Many different cultures have been developed in communities over time.
The community where we live now also integrates and represents political,
economic, sociocultural, historical and geographical aspects of human lives.
Therefore communities provide main materials and scenes that are integrated
access to the curriculum of social studies. This is why many localization studies that combined learning materials of communities have been
conducted. Students could learn about communities with a fascination and
interest through field trips, one of those ways to have better understanding
about communities along with a lot of emphasis on community study today.
There have also been a number of studies regarding local field trips in
Jeju. A study was conducted with an educational museum as field trip
research of social studies where you can see what the life of people in Jeju
was like in the past with lots of exhibitions of folk materials and experience
many different activities. Only the study about field trip programs regarding
Jeju Museum of Education was available in social studies among the
museums that exhibit Jeju folk materials such as Jeju Museum of Education,
Jeju Folklore and National History Museum, Seongeup Folk Village and Jeju
Folk Village Museum.
I selected Jeju Folk Village Museum and developed field trip programs.
Because folk materials about the mountain village, Jungsangan village, and
the fishing village were displayed in the Jeju Folk Village Museum, people
could see Jeju's unique culture. So I developed a program which could be
experienced in the Jeju Folk Village Museum. During my research, I found
that by including textbook contents for understanding Korean culture and
local contents for understanding local culture, the program would help
students understand local communities better.
Field trip programs included the mountain village course, Jungsangan
village course, the fishing village course and courses of galleries of fishing
gears and farming tools. Using activities and questions regarding clothing,
eating and living habits of people in Jeju from each course, they also help
students understand the community. Especially, they had students learn
about the necessities of life of their ancestors who lived in Jeju through Jeju
Folk Village Museum and find out what differences they had from what it
says in the text book that includes general Korean culture and why there exist those differences. This allowed them to determine the general
characteristics of Korea and regional particularity and understand the
community more effectively.
Also, it will help following researchers conduct their study or teachers
design their class with this study as a guide by providing the meaning of
developed field trip programs and questions expected to come up during
learning.
