This paper attempts to show whether urban design guideline is appropriate for knowledge representation framework and, if possible, develop an urban design expert system which can determine possible building use for a given lot within an urban design area. The paper deals with the following contents;
Firstly, the paper shows that it is possible to convert Korean urban design guidelines currently in use into the form of knowledge base which can then be used in the real world application program for private consultation and public appeal at the government offices. Secondly, a prototype of an application program together with knowledge base has been developed so that effective input and classification of urban design knowledge could be possible. Thirdly, the program allows easy access of urban design information through the use of knowledge base in determining allowed or recommended building use
for a given lot.
