시민교육을 위한 Service-learning 활용 방안 = Service-Learning for Citizenship Education

Social studies education helps students to develop their skills and competences and to make informed and reasoned decisions. In the future society, the social studies education should consider what kinds of skills and competences are needed to be competitive citizens. The social studies education should enable students to be eligible to live in a rapidly changing society. The most important one is that competencies should be practiced in field rather than being taught in class. Therefore the ways of improving competencies should be developed in connection to real life experiences and schooling and along with the renovation of curriculum. For this reason, this study introduces service-learning as the best way to mature competencies since students participate in community at first hand using what they learn in class. This study provides the example of how to apply service-learning to a discipline, here economics from the 2009 revised social studies curriculum.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회과교육의 목표는 현재 학생들이 다가올 사회의 시민으로서 그 역할을 다 할 수 있도록 필요한 지식과 역량을 배양하는 것이다. 여기서 중요한 점은 역량이란 전통적인 교실수업방식으로 는 한계가 있기 때문에 역량을 함양하기 위해서는 학교교육체제와 학교 밖 교육체제의 연계를 연결할 수 있는 방법이 필요하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 지식을 내재화하고 필요한 시민의 역량을 기를 수 있는 교수·학습방법으로 service-learning의 활용을 제안하였다. Service-learning은 경험교육의 한 형태로 학생들이 지역사회의 문제와 필요를 인식하고, 교실에서 배운 학문적 지식을 바탕으로 협동하여 문제를 해결해 나가는 방법으로 그 과정 속에서 시민역량을 기를 수 있다는 강점이 있다. 그리고 무엇보다 지역사회에 직접 참여하고 결과물을 통해 지역사회 문제를 해결하고 필요를 충족시키는 데 사용된다는 점에서 능동적인 민주시민을 양성하는데 효과적인 방법이라 할 수 있다. 이에 service-learning을 사회과교육에서 활용하기 위해 그 주요 단계를 요약하고, 2009 개정 교육과정의 경제 과목을 예로 실현 가능한 수업의 형태를 모색해 보았다.
