청교도 성경 교육 : 로버트 에벗(Robert Abbot, 1588-1662)의 소요리 문답서에 대한 분석 = The Puritan Biblical Education: The Analysis of Robert Abbot(1588-1662)’s Catechism

In 2022, the negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has begun to settle down. In this situation, the church is forced to maintain both the unity of the church and the true nature of the gospel. Thus, it is helpful to examine the pedagogical concerns, methods, and applications of catechism in the Reformed tradition, in terms that Reformed confessional documents and catechism played an pivotal role in establishing an evangelical perspective, and resulted in the rise of educational issues. Particularly, the Puritans attempted to provide various methods of education, with the use of easy analogies, the practice of the biblical reading, and the proper arrangement of theological topic for the purpose of theological education. The article argues that Robert Abbot’s catechism offers an effective model for the home education of the Bible. Abbot provided various concrete methods for the educators, emphasizing the true knowledge, by which the participants could experience the presence of God in a personal way. He also promoted the home education by facilitating interactive discussions between the parents and children by the use of various analogy. Furthermore, his biblical exegesis provides an easy explanation of the biblical texts and the varied examples of the Bible, which prove highly significant in his dealing with the biblical doctrines. Quite in contrast to contemporary scholars who argues that catechism or doctrines are dry, this perspective sheds a fresh light on the practical significance of the biblical education at home.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

2022년 코로나19의 여파가 진정국면에 접어든 요즘, 한국교회에서 가장 필요한 것은 교회의 통일성을 유지하고 복음 신앙을 확고히 붙잡는 일일 것이다. 이를 위해 종교개혁 전통의 교리 교육에 관해 살펴보는 것은 매우 유익하다. 종교개혁자들에 의한 교리 교육서들은 복음 신앙의 통일성을 확립하는데 매우 중요했을 뿐만 아니라 효과적인 교육 방법론의 개발로 이어졌다. 특히, 청교도들은 효과적인 교리교수법을 위해 각고의 노력을 기울였다. 본고는 17세기 청교도 신학자인 로버트 에벗의 소요리 문답서를 분석함으로써 그의 작품이 가정에서의 효과적인 성경 교육의 모델을 제공하고 있음을 증명한다. 에벗은 성경 교육 과정에서 습득한 지식을 인격적인 지식으로 승화할 수 있는 구체적인 방법들을 제시하였다. 교리교육 시행자와 참여자의 눈높이에 맞추어 풍부한 비유를 사용하고, 성경적 논증과 근거 본문들을 해설하고 다수의 성경적 예시들을 제공함으로써, 교리 교육의 기초가 성경에 대한 믿음에 놓여있음을 강조했다. 그의 소요리 문답은 교리가 메마르거나 죽은 신학의 대변인이 아니라, 오히려 그리스도인의 삶에 구체적인 실천 방향과 적용점들을 반영한다.
