The purpose of this study is to present the roles of the parents who play the core roles in inspiring and encouraging the achievement motivations of middle school students and at the same time to understand the behaviors of the students and finally to render some assistance in educating them by examining the relationship between the parental rearing attitudes perceived by the middle school students and their achievement motivation. The research topics to this end are elaborated as follows.
Research topic 1. How are their parental rearing attitudes related to the achievement motivation of middle school students?
Research topic 2. What kinds of impacts do their parental rearing attitudes perceived by middle school students cause on the achievement motivations of the students?
Research topic 3, To what extent do their parental rearing attitudes perceived by middle school students and their achievement motivations vary with the factors (by genders)?
To achieve such research purposes, I measured the parental child-rearing behaviors and examined the achievement motivations of 606 middle school boys and girls of three middle schools located in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do and coded the findings and verified Pearson correlation coefficient, one-way ANOVA, post Scheffe's verification, t verification, and multiple regression analysis by use of Statistics Processing Program, and also verified the level of the significance of the findings at p<.05 level of significance by use of SPSS/PC 11.0. The detailed research findings are given below.
1. With respect to the correlation between the parental rearing attitudes perceived by middle school students and their achievement motivation, father's rearing attitudes are shown more correlated than mother's rearing attitudes. Among father's rearing attitudes, the correlation responded positive to supervision, future-readiness, a sense of confidence, a sense of responsibility, father's rational explanation and a sense of responsibility, an adventurous spirit challenge, father's excessive expectation and future readiness, and a sense of confidence, a sense of responsibility, an adventurous spirit, challenge, father's affection and future readiness, a sense of confidence, a sense of responsibility, mother's rational explanation, and future readiness, a Sense of confidence, a Sense of responsibility, challenge and mother's excessive expectation, and future readiness, a sense of confidence, a sense of responsibility, an adventurous spirit, challenge, task-oriented mother's excessive intervention, an adventurous spirit, and challenge, mother's affection and future readiness, and a sense of confidence, a sense of responsibility while non-consistency and future readiness and a sense of responsibility among mother's reading attitudes, and negligence and future readiness, a sense of confidence responded negative. Among parental rearing attitudes, the rearing attitude responded highly correlated to future readiness among the achievement motivations of middle school students, and father's excessive expectation rearing attitude was found the least positive to challenge, while father's non-consistent rearing attitudes show the most negative correlation in respect of a sense of responsibility. On the other hand, mother's rearing attitudes rational explanation and an adventurous spirit show the lowest correlation in respect.
2. The impacts of the parental rearing attitudes perceived by middle school students on their achievement motivations were shown on mother's excessive expectation and affectionate rearing attitudes among mother's rearing attitudes affecting the achievement motivations of the students.
3. With respect to the variances with genders among the parental rearing attitudes and achievement motivations, father's rearing attitudes are perceived by middle schoolboys in the order of affection, excessive intervention, rational explanation, excessive expectation, supervision, persecution, non-consistency, and negligence while they are perceived by middle schoolgirls in the order of affection, excessive intervention, rational explanation, excessive expectation, supervision, persecution, non-consistency and negligence. The non-consistency of father among father's rearing attitudes is significant and is perceived by middle schoolboys more strongly than by middle schoolgirls. Supervision and persecution among mother's rearing attitudes caused more significant variances. Supervision is more strongly perceived by middle schoolgirls and schoolboys, while persecution is more strongly perceived by middle schoolboys than schoolgirls. In respect of achievement motivations, an adventurous spirit and challenge brought about more significant variances and were perceived by middle schoolboys more significantly than by school girls, according to the research findings.
