      This paper concerns about the structural characteristics and meaning of folk ballads about husband-wife. Folk ballads about husband-wife consists of four types. (1) The wife who sigh because of her husband’s unexpected death (2) The wife who commit a suicide because of her husband’s sexual relationship with a prostitute. (3) The husband who sigh because of his wife’s unexpected death. (4) The husband who reject his wife that had betrayed him. The structure can be classified with three sub-types: the first is the type of desire completion, the second is the type of demand frustration, and the last is the mixed type. Most of folk ballads about husband-wife belong to the type of demand frustration, i.e. a couple die or separated, except for the Seodapnorae. Most of folk ballads about husband-wife are closed with the unhappy ending, meanwhile only the Seodapnorae is closed with the happy ending. This means that it is not easy for husbands and wives in the traditional society to be happy in love and marriage. This shows the reality of life and a person’s spiritlessness confronting with the reality in the traditional society.
      People who create and transmit folk ballads about husband & wife express their consciousness through them as follows.
      1) They frustrate at the reality that the love between a husband and a wife cannot be true.
      2) They express and criticize a traditional patriarchal system.
      3) They reflect the women’s status and make people reconsider carefully.
      Folk ballads about husband-wife is composed of a dramatic narrative story and contains the frankness in people’s consciousness. They could, therefore, be got very important valuation in literal estimation.
