      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

After the death of Stalin in 1953, mass protests against foreign rule and against censorship of the press took over the shaken Soviet Bloc.
In Poland, the political thaw began in 1956 with W. Gomulka’s return to power who had previously been persecuted by Polish Stalinists. This marked a turning point for Polish writers: in their works, they sharply criticized the personality cult and naïve optimism of socialist realism literature.
Marek Hlasko (1934-1969), the author of The Eighth Day of the Week, was the idol of Poland’s young generation. In his novels, he did not hesitate to depict poverty, alcoholism, negligence of morality, and brutality of everyday life, portrayals of which were prohibited during the Stalin Era in Poland between 1948 and 1954.
In The Eighth Day of the Week, Peter and Agnes are students who are in love with each other. Much to their annoyance, they don’t have a room in which they can meet undisturbed and in private: while Peter shares a room with two other students, Agnes lives in a small room with her old parents. Her alcoholic brother Gregor lives in the kitchen with Zawadzki, who joined the family twelve years ago. Agnes and Gregor do not have any respect for their parents. In fact, they hate to live at their parents’ home which has a cross and a portrait of Stalin. Unlike their parents, they know there is no real difference between the cross and Stalin’s portrait, because neither the cross nor the portrait represents understandable ideas for them. Socialism and religion are no longer attractive to the young generation.
Outside their home, drunk and aggressive young people fill the streets of Warsaw. On several occasions, Agnes experiences sexual harassment by the drunk crowd. In such a poverty-stricken situation, Agnes and Peter never find a room to spend some time by themselves. In her disappointment, and frustration, Agnes sleeps with a man she meets at a bar. Similarly, Zawadzki’s fiancée Maria without remorse also betrays him.
In depicting the pressing problem of housing shortage in Warsaw through the lives of young couples, the novel highlights the dark side of real socialism. In the end, only destroyed hopes and ruined relationships remain.
