비인지적 특성과 청년층 노동시장 진입 및 성과 = Non-cognitive Traits and Early Labor Market Outcomes

This paper investigates the relationship between early labor market performances and non-cognitive abilities among young people in Korea, using the Korean Education and Employment Panel (KEEP) data. The “Big Five” personality traits (openness to experiences, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism) are used to measure individuals’ non-cognitive traits. We use a cox proportional hazard model to analyze the relationship between personality and the duration of transition to first employment. The association between wage and Big5 is analyzed using a linear regression model. The results indicate that extraversion is positively correlated with a speedy entrance to the labor market as well as with a high salary. Conscientiousness is positively related to wage, whereas neuroticism is negatively associated with wage. In addition, we find that the relationships between the early labor market performances and non-cognitive traits differ by gender.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국교육고용패널을 이용하여 청년층의 비인지적 특성과 초기노동시장 성과와의 관계를 분석하였다. 비인지적 특성으로는 다섯 가지 성격특성인 Big5(경험에 대한 개방성, 성실성, 외향성, 친화성, 신경증)를 사용하였다. 청년층의 첫 직장 취업소요기간과 성격과의 관계를 분석하기 위해 콕스비례위험 모형을 사용하였고 첫 직장에서의 임금과 Big5와의 관련성을 파악하기 위해 선형회귀모형을 이용하였다. 분석 결과, 외향성은 초기 노동시장의 빠른 진입과 높은 임금에 모두 양의 관계가 존재하고 성실성과 신경증은 임금과 각각 양, 음의 관계가 존재하였다. 남녀 각각 분석한 결과, 외향성과 미취업기간 탈출확률과의 관계는 남녀 모두 밀접한 관련이 있었고 신경증과 임금의 역의 관계 역시 성별에 따른 차이 없이 모두 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 남성의 경우, 추가적으로 성실성이 빠른 취업과 높은 임금에 모두 양의 관계가 있고 외향성이 높은 임금과 관계가 있는 것으로 나타나 성별에 따른 차이를 보였다.
