朝鮮朝 明宗의 學術活動과 書籍文化에 관한 考察 = A Study on Academic Activities and Bibliographic Culture during King Myeongjong Period in Joseon Dynasty

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The study is intended to clarify how the book publishing and printing related to the political and social background, and academic activity of King Myeongjong in Joseon Dynasry. The major findings are as follows:1. The political and social circumstances during King Myeongjong, includes many internal and external troubles such as ‘Eulsa Sahwa(乙巳士禍)’, ‘Yangjae Beyeokseo case(良才驛壁書事件)’, ‘rebel of Lim Ggeok-jeong(林巨正의 亂)’ and ‘Eulmyo Japanese Invasion(乙卯倭變)’, was negative factors to the development of the book culture.
2. King Myeongjong did not have love of learning in his nature. Therefore he gradually became less interested in academic activities with royal scholars. Accordingly, his characters and academic activities were not influential enough to directly lead the development of academic and bibliographic climate.
3. King Myeongjong’s public academic promotion policies had not been effective, but he institutionalized the private schools(Seowon) to promote private academies, which can be highly considered because it laid the basis for the development of private academy development and seemed to influence on more book publication.
4. The book compilations were rather poor due to the King Myeongjong’s passive academic activities, while the local book publications were active, being influenced by the previous King Jungjong Period when the printing business was active due to the developed type casts and print improvements.
