개화기 연극의 형성에 미친 ｢협률사｣의 영향에 대한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그간의 논의에서는 고종의 칭경예식을 위하여 ｢협률사｣를 만들었으나, 칭경예식이 연기되면서 일반 극장으로 바뀌었다고 했다. 이러한 설명은 여러 면에서 애매한 점을 안고 있다. 먼저, 고종의 칭경예식 계획에 ｢협률사｣가 보이지 않는다는 것이다. 칭경예식을 위해 ｢협률사｣를 세웠다면 어떠한 용도로 사용할 예정이었는지가 드러나야 할 터인데 계획 중에 아무런 언급이 없다. 그리고 고종의 칭경예식이 국가와 황실의 위상을 제고하려는 목적을 가지고 있었다는 점을 고려해보자면, ｢봉상시｣ 건물의 일부를 사용하여 극장을 설립 했다는 것도 이치에 맞지 않아 보인다. 서구의 대극장을 모범으로 삼은 극장을 건축하는 편이 칭경예식을 빛내기에 더욱 적합하기 때문이다. ｢협률사｣의 위치도 현재 알려진 것처럼 봉상시 구내에 있지를 않고 야주현 근처의 현 새문안 교회 자리에 자리하고 있었다고 보아야 하겠다.
당시 언론을 통해 파악할 수 있는 ｢협률사｣의 활동과 칭경예식의 진행을 비교해보면 일치되는 바가 없다는 사실을 알 수가 있다. ｢협률사｣는 칭경예식과 무관하게 영업활동을 하고 있으며, 1902년 12월에 내외진연이 거행되는 동안에 <소춘대유희>를 공연하기도 한다. 이런 점에서 볼 때, 장봉환과 같은 관헌, 혹은 당대 사회의 유력자들이 중심이 되어 건립한 희대회사가 ｢협률사｣라고 보는 편이 타당하겠다. 그 당시 관료들이 주축이 되어 회사를 설립하는 경우가 많았으며, 이러한 회사들은 반관반민의 형태로 운영되어 백성들에게 혼란을 안겨 주기도 했다. ｢협률사｣의 경우도 그러한 관례를 이용하여 영업 활동을 한 것으로 보인다. 1906년에 ｢협률사｣ 혁파론이 일어났을 때, ｢협률사｣가 궁내부 소속으로 거짓행세하고 있다는 비난을 받고 있는 것에서 그 사실을 알 수가 있다.
｢협률사｣는 근대적 공연 체계를 개화기 연극계에 도입 시키는 한편, 새로운 공연물을 제작하여 개화기 연극계의 변화를 선도해 나갔다. 상업적 이익을 추구하는 희대회사이기 때문에 관객들의 취향을 고려하여 새로운 공연물을 계속 만들어야 했다. ｢협률사｣의 설립 주체들이 양반인 까닭에 그들이 접해 왔던 기녀들의 공연물과 판소리를 선택하여, 실내극장에 공연하기 좋은 형태로 해체하여 재구성하였다. 그 결과 <소춘대유희>와 같은 종합적 연행물이 만들어진 것이다. 종합적 연행물은 관객의 취향에 맞추어 계속 재구성된 것으로 보이는데, 그 과정에서 판소리에서 창극이 생성되는 계기를 맞게 되었다. 기생들을 공연무대에 불러들인 것도 특기할만한 사실인데, ｢협률사｣로 인하여 등장한 기생 출신의 배우들이 1910년대 여성 배우의 대부분을 차지하였다.
｢협률사｣의 종합적 연행물은 서사성이 아주 약한 공연물이다. 그러므로 ｢협률사｣의 공연물은 본질적으로 개화담론을 수용할 여지가 없다. 관객에게 관람의 대상으로 존재할 뿐이지, 관객에게 애국·계몽담론을 전하는 공연물은 아닌 것이다. ｢협률사｣ 공연물과 영업 방침에 대한 비판적 목소리는 1906년에 이르러 연극개량론을 촉발시킨다. 연극개량론자들은 ｢협률사｣의 공연물이 고전극에 기반을 두고 있으므로, 고전극 자체를 거부하고 비판하는 데까지 이르렀다. 그

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Up to now it was known that Hyupyul-sa was made to hold the celebration of King Kojong and it changed into an ordinary theater because the celebration was postponed. But according to the press of those days which can make us compare the activities of Hyupyul-sa with the progress of the celebration, we come to know that Hyupyul-sa was never used to hold the celebration. And unlike the fact that Hyupyul-sa was in Bongsangsi, it can be guessed that it was in the building of the Bureau of Northwest Rail Road near Yajuhyun. Hyupyul-sa had been in business regardless of the celebration of King Kojong. Even during the December of 1902 when the banquet for King Kojong was being held, Sochundaeuhee was performed in Hyupyul-sa.
In this terms, it is more reasonable that government officials like Jang Bonghwan and the leaders of society founded Hyupyul-sa, a company of public performance. It was usual those days that the company was founded with the government officials as centering figures. These companies were managed as the company related a government, so the ordinary people were confused about them. It seemed that Hyupyul-sa also was in business taking advantage of this custom. Because of this, Hyupyul-sa was blamed for pretending to be a council for royal household, when the opinions to quit the Hyupyul-sa's public performance was brought up in 1906.
Hyupyul-sa fixed the modern system of performance to the theatre world of an enlightened age and took the lead the change of theatre by making new works. It was that Because Hyupyul-sa was a company of performance in pursuit of profits, it had to keep on making the new works considering the audience's tastes. Because the centering figures founding Hyupyul-sa were the aristocrats, they deconstructed Pansori and the performance of show girls whom they had contacted and reconstructed them as the performances more suitable to inside theatre. As the result, the variety shows like Sochundaeuhee were made. The variety shows which seemed to be reconstructed to be fit to the audience's tastes gave the opportunity of creating Changguk from Pansori in its process.
