Fishing gives people a lot of pleasure through the journey to catch fish, the process of preparing for fishing, and the pleasure of catching fish. In the past, fishing was mainly a hobby enjoyed by a limited group of middle-aged men, but since September 2017, it has changed from a limited class of hobbies to a public hobby with professional fishing channels and entertainment programs related to fishing being aired on the general programming channel. Due to this effect, there are reports that more people are fishing as a hobby than those who do mountain climbing as a hobby.
Our country's carp fishing with multiple fishing poles is completely different from the Western fishing methods, and somewhat different from the fishing methods of neighboring Japan and China. One of the most distinctive features of carp fishing with multiple fishing pole is waiting fishing. The fishing chair is one of the most frequently used and essential items among the tools and supplies needed for fishing due to the nature of waiting carp fishing. The convenience of fishing chairs is very important in the process of fishing, which is waiting in a chair for a long time. Also, fishing chairs need various functions or additional supplies accordingly because they do various activities sitting on fishing chairs. In this respect, existing fishing chairs are not meeting the needs of anglers enough.
Therefore, this research was aimed at deriving design requirements for fishing chairs by surveying and analyzing user experiences among fishing men who fish carp fishing with multiple fishing poles in small lake fishing in our country, and thus developing the design of fishing chairs and additional items.
According to this research purpose, the theoretical background was based on the analysis of freshwater fishing and user experience in Korea, focusing on various literature researches. Next, the research product, Fishing Chair, was investigated and analyzed, and the first FGI (Focused Group Interview) was conducted on five members with more than 10 years of experience as a hobby of carp fishing with multiple fishing poles to derive the necessary elements that fishing chair should have. Based on this, user surveys and experience analysis were conducted to derive requirements for fishing chairs. Through a user survey of a group of people who enjoy carp fishing with multiple fishing poles, I identified the inconvenience of fishing chairs based on their experience in using them, and the need for additional and improved functions for convenience. In order to analyze the user experience, a fisherman with 25 years of experience was required to draw up a user journey map, focusing on the fishing chair, with the user experience taking place in the process of enjoying carp fishing with multiple fishing poles, and the design requirements for fishing chairs were derived by analyzing user experience according to specific touch points.
Based on this, four major design directions have been set. First, considering transportation, installation, use, withdrawal, and storage, a rigid folding structure using lightweight materials was employed to increase usability. Second, based on mesh-based ventilation sheets, a seat cover option was employed to maximize warmth, heat, and seating, and a headrest, waist support, and pent-up support were applied to the sheet to increase convenience. Third, flexibility was increased through individual adjustment of the length of the legs of the chair considering the bottom situation of the fishing area, prevention of scratching and sliding of the feet of the fishing chair, application of leg support considering rest and sleep, and application of reclining technology to adjust the angle of the backrest. Fourth, the expansion was enhanced by employing options such as small shelves for various props and supplies used during fishing, removable small auxiliary tables for storing communication devices or auxiliary batteries, and single-person screen tents for blocking rain, wind, and sunlight.
The fishing chair design was developed in line with this design direction, and by simulation through the 3D program, the interference problems of parts according to the function performance were checked at each stage. In addition, the second FGI was conducted to evaluate the results of the fishing chair design. The second FGI was evaluated with eight usability improvement questions applied with a five-point scale related to the additional options including the expected weight, rigidity and refining system of fishing chairs, the size of the backrests and backrests, the size of the base mesh sheets and thick comfort seat covers, the control of leg lengths using metal clamps, and the storage of communication devices and accessories, targeting 10 fishing experts in their 50s with more than 20 years of carp fishing with multiple fishing poles experience. As a result of the evaluation, the average of 4.29 and the standard deviation of 0.457 were valued for deriving design requirements through user experience analysis and developing the design accordingly.
