The study on the female gametophyte formation of Artemisia maritima, which is known as a santonin-yielding plant and is also cultivated in foreign countries, was carried out and the results obtained may be summarized as follows.
1. Nucellar type is of tennuinuceilae type.
2. Ovule shows a anatropous type.
3. Integument is unitegumic type.
4. The arrangement of megaspore tetrad is of linear type.
5 . The functional megaspore is mostly observed at the chalazal end, but also is rarely showed at the micropylar end.
6. At the stage of matured embryo sac, the synergids are not showed and are more ephemeral than that of other plant.
7. The cytoplasm within matured embryo sac not only surrounds egg apparatus and fusion nucleus also occupies nearly most of embryo sac area.
8 . Embryo sac is a monosporic 8-nucleate polygonum type.
