아동의 실시간 관계절 처리에 대한 언어 간 비교 안구이동추적 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 영어를 모국어로 습득하는 만 3~5세 아동이 실시간으로 제시되는 문장을 어떻게 이해하고 처리(processing)하는지를 살펴보고, 성인 모국어 화자들의 처리 양상과 비교하였다. 안구운동추적(eyetracking) 방법을 이용하였고, 부정문과 그에 상응하는 긍정문이 제시되는 동안 나타나는 피험자의 안구이동(eye movements) 양상을 측정하였다. 그 결과 성인들은 선행연구들에서 밝히고 있는 바와 같이 문장을 순차적, 점진적(incremental)으로 처리하는 것으로 나타났고, 만 4~5세의 아동도 성인과 거의 유사한 패턴으로 문장을 이해하고 처리하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편 만 3세 아동들은 성인이나 만 4~5세 아동에 비해 부정문을 처리하는 시간이 보다 오래 걸렸으나, 성인들과 유사하게 문장을 순차적으로 처리하는 것으로 나타났다. 동사가 문장 끝에 위치하는 한국어도 실시간 부정문 처리에서 동일한 결과를 보여 주어서, 점진적 문장처리 가설의 언어보편적 타당성을 확인할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examined the on-line processing of negative sentences by young children and adult native speakers, using an eye-tracking method. The results showed that adult speakers and 4-to-5-year-old children processed both affirmative and negative sentences incrementally. However, 3-year-old children's online processing of negative sentences took place at a slower rate than adults and older children, but still in an incremental manner. These results support the crosslinguistic validity of the incremental processing hypothesis.
