As humanoid service robots (HSRs) become increasingly integrated into consumers’ daily lives, firms are not only leveraging the functional performance of robots but also their external design as a strategic cue to shape consumer perceptions and adoption. This research examines how power distance belief (PDB)—the degree to which individuals accept hierarchy—influences consumers’ responses to robot design. Across a pilot study and three experiments, this research finds that high-PDB consumers show a stronger preference for angular (vs. circular) service robot shapes, whereas low-PDB consumers show the opposite pattern. This effect arises because angularity is associated with instrumental (vs. relational) role characteristics, qualities that align with high-(vs. low) PDB consumers’ values. This research identifies PDB as a key determinant of how consumers expect robot orientation, thereby predicting preferences for robots’ visual design. The findings advance understanding of the cultural foundations of human–robot interaction and offer actionable guidance for firms designing robots for global markets.
