Osteoarthritis, one of the chronic diseases, arising from degenerative deformity, gives great pain to patients, due to decrease of ROM arising from joint deformity, as will as pain. Accordingly, after interviewing 96 female patients in 8 orthopedic surgery clinics in Cheonan for 3 months from Jan. 2003 to Mar. 2003 and measuring ROM to find factors impacting on the decrease of ROM in knee osteoarthritis patients.
The results obtained were as follows ;
1. As patients get older, and their education level gets lower, in the group where BMI was in overweight and obese, ROM showed some decreased(p<0.05).
2. ROM showed some decrease in production worker group including agriculture, fishery and simple labor, compared with other occupation groups. Also, ROM decreased in the group where a patient's occupation was lifting heavy stuffs, and as the period that they had engaged in the job was longer(p<0.05).
3. ROM showed some decrease in the group of the patients who combined from other disease(p<0.05).
4. As patients' arthritis morbidity period was longer, especially more than 30 years, ROM showed a rapid decrease. In the group with varus deformity' and in the group with swelling, ROM decreased(p<0.05).
To reduce pain deriving from secondary musculoskeletal system diseases, due to the decrease of ROM from the knee osteoarthritis patients, patients' adequate weight should be maintained, working condition should be improved, and they should be more thoroughly managed if knee osteoarthritis was suffered with other diseases. In this manner, the movement range of the patients should be expanded for them not to feel pain. Also, various ROM decrease prevention programs that can be simultaneously conducted with long-term disease management should presumably be developed.
