도마복음의 깨달음에 대한 禪的패러다임 이해

국문 초록 (Abstract)

도마복음의 고고학적 발견은 종교사상사적(宗敎思想史的)으로 대단히 중요한 업적을 이룬다. 특히 이곳에서 발견된 완전한 콥트 도마복음 어록은 21세기에 요청되는 신영성(新靈性)을 제시한다. 지금까지 도마복음의 선행연구들은 대부분 서구학자들과 소수의 국내학자들의 의해서 연구가 진행되어졌다. 기존학자들은 서구화 되어진 관점으로 도마복음을 이해하려고 했다. 이러한 연구 시각은 역사적 예수를 새롭게 파악하기 어렵다는 문제가 제기된다.

도마복음의 지혜․신비 영지(靈智)는 서구 철학적 논리나 신학적 시각으로 그 주제를 파악할 수 없다. 그 이유는 동양적이고 원초적인 영성인(靈性人) 예수의 놀라운 음성을 제대로 들을 수 없기 때문이다. 따라서 연구자는 도마복음을 정경(正經)으로서의 정통성을 주장하고자 하는 것이 아니다. 단지 도마복음의 예수를 통해 21세기에 요청되는 새로운 종교 영성이 찾아지기를 기대하고 있다. 이는 동양적 사유구조를 나타내는 예수의 모습으로 그 가치가 지대하다고 본다.

도마복음의 깨달음에 대한 禪的패러다임을 이해하기 위하여 타력신앙인 타방정토의 일반적 개념과 유심정토의 사상적 전개와 이론적 배경으로 초기불교의 심식(心識)사상과 유식(唯識)학파의 소의경전(所依經典)인 해심밀경(解深密經) 등의 대승경전을 비교 연구한 것이다. 특히 자력신앙인 유심정토를 통해 대승(大乘)경전에 나타나는 일체중생실유불성(一切衆生悉有佛性)과 자성청정심(自性淸淨心) 여래장(如來藏)의 불성(佛性)사상에서 심성본정(心性本淨)과 객진번뇌(客塵煩惱)의 관계성을 찾아볼 수 있다. 이를 통해 도마복음의 깨달음과 유심정토에 대한 비교 분석이 가능하며, 비교연구는 도마복음의 신성과 유심정토의 불성으로 확인된다. 결국 유심정토의 불성과 신성은 모든 인간에게 내재된 근본적 ‘성품’임을 발견할 수 있다.

결과적으로 본 연구의 목적은 도마복음에 나타난 깨달음과 관련된 어록을 통해 선적(禪的)패러다임을 발견하여 다음 목표를 달성하는 데 있다. 이는 ①즉심시불(卽心是佛)의 선사상과 관련된 어록을 확인하고 깨달음구조에서 신성을 불교적 개념으로 파악하여 ②선적인식구조인 자등명(自燈明)과 문(問)사(思)수(修)구조를 이해하는 것이며 ③ 최종적으로, 깨달음의 선적(禪的)구조로 자력적인 인식구조를 확인하는 것에 있다.

종합적으로, 그동안 서구의 사상적 논리로만 진행되어 오던 도마복음의 연구가 불교사상과의 비교 연구가 가능하다는 점을 확인하고 있다는 측면에서 본 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Archaeological discovery of the Gospel of Thomas has been a significantly important achievement for the history of religious ideology. Complete sayings of the Coptic Gospel of Thomas is presented new spirituality which is demanded in 21st century. Until now, the studies on the Gospel of Thomas have been conducted mostly by western scholars and a handful of domestic scholars. Existing scholars tried to understand the Gospel of Thomas with westernized perspectives. Such research perspectives have been challenged with many issues for their difficulties to identify historical Jesus newly.

The wisdom, mystery and spiritual knowledge of the Gospel of Thomas and its subject matter cannot be fully comprehended with western philosophical logic and theological perspective. The reason is that the voice Jesus who is oriental and the basis of spirituality can’t be easily heard in the context of such paradigm. Therefore, I am not trying to claim the legitimacy of the Gospel of Thomas as the cannon. However I expect that new religious spirituality could be found in the Gospel of Thomas. I believe that the appearance of Jesus that shows the structure of eastern reasoning itself has great value.
