본 연구는 피터 매티슨의 주요 작품에 반복적으로 등장하면서 그의 소설을 이해하는 것은 물론 그 속에 구현된 생태학적 상상력을 총체적으로 파악하는 데 중요한 토대가 되는 인디언의 전통적 정신문화를 선불교와 연관지어 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 본 자료를 분석 대상으로 삼아 연구하였다.
