탕기 비엘의 미국 소설 쓰기 전략의 이론과 실제 - 『짐 설리반의 실종』 연구 = Tanguy Viel’s Theory and Practice on Writing an American Novel A Study of The Disappearance of Jim Sullivan

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Metafiction is one of the most significant forms of representation in post-modern literature which agrees that the language of novel cannot fully express the reality in which we live and thus offers a view on the process of creation itself. Tanguy Viel’s novel, The Disappearance of Jim Sullivan published in 2013 presents a double narrative form in which a diegesis narrator crosses freely the boundaries that separate him from the metadiegesis hero whose name is Dwayne Koster. Viel’s novel seems to fit in the category of metafiction in a sense that the narrator describes relentlessly his own creating process. However the narrator’s ambition to write an american novel is more like a literary parody than a real goal as an author. By trying to analyze the narrative forms and techniques of the novel based on Gerard Genette’s narrative discourse, we will be able to fully appreciate the multiple functions of its narrator who seems to invite the readers to his real desire hidden under the mask of parody.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

소설 언어는 현실을 재현할 수 없다는 사실을 직시한 포스트모더니즘의 다양한 문학적 재 현 방식 중 하나인 메타픽션은 픽션을 창작함과 동시에 그 창작 과정을 진술함으로써 픽션에 대한 픽션을 제공한다. 탕기 비엘의 『짐 설리반의 실종』은 틀소설의 외부에 위치한 1인칭 화자가 내부의 주인공 드웨인 코스터에 관한 이야기를 서술하는 중첩 서사를 보여준다. 디에 게시스 화자는 자신의 창작 과정을 끊임없이 노출시키고 메타디에게시스 인물의 사건에 개입 하며 소설에 관한 또 하나의 소설을 제공하고, 해당 작품은 이를 통해 메타픽션의 모델에 편 입된다. 작품 속 화자는 미국 소설을 쓰겠다는 야심을 가진 프랑스인 작가로 실재와 허구 사 이의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나든다. 비엘은 이와 같은 서사 장치를 통해 독자에게 문학 텍스트의 허구성을 지각시킴으로써 소설 읽기를 낯설게 만든다. 이번 연구에서 우리는 메타픽션의 서 사구조를 갖는 비엘의 작품을 주네트의 서사이론에 기대어 분석하고자 한다. 서술의 다양한 층위, 내용, 시점 등을 분석함으로써 이중 서사에서 화자가 수행하는 기능과 의미를 이해할 것이다. 이를 통해 비엘의 화자가 전면으로 내세운 미국 소설 쓰기의 이론과 실제는 과연 어 떤 의미를 갖고 있으며 작가의 본질적인 의도는 무엇인지 파악할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
