포우의 「도난당한 편지」에 대한 라캉과 데리다의 대립을 넘어 = Beyond Dissension between Lacan and Derrida on Poe’s “The Purloined Letter”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 에드거 앨런 포우의 「도난당한 편지」에 대한 자크 라캉과 자크 데리다의 견해 차이를 조명한 뒤, 편지 혹은 글자와 관련하여 두 사상가의 견해가 어떠한 이론적 공통점을 지니는 지에 대해 탐구한다. 우선, 데리다는 「도난당한 편지」에 대한 라캉의 해석을 비판하는데, 이는 라캉이 편지를 상징적 의미의 완성을 목표로 기능하는 남근적 기표로 해석하기 때문이다. 라캉적 해석이 편지의 순환으로 인한 상상적 자아 정체성의 전복을 강조한다 하더라도, 데리다에게 있어 라캉적 편지/글자/기표의 움직임은 근본적으로 상징적 체계의 전체성을 완성하는 데 일조한다. 그러나 글자가 object a, 실재, 여성적 주이상스와 맺는 관계를 고려해 볼 때, 라캉의 견해는 차연과 반복가능성을 강조하는 데리다의 연구와 구조적으로 유사함을 알 수 있다. 데리다의 차연과 반복가능성이 본질적이고 초월적인 정체성의 불가능성과 타자성의 끊임없는 발생을 가리키듯, 여성적 주이상스를 포함하는 라캉의 글자 역시 상징계의 구조적 비일관성과 의미의 초월적 통합의 불가능성을 구현하기 때문이다. 두 사상가 모두 초월적 의미화의 근본적 불가능성을 강조한다는 점에서, 라캉의 연구는 데리다의 해체주의적 접근과 궤를 같이 한다고 볼 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to investigate how Jacques Lacan and Jacques Derrida share theoretical common ground beyond their dissension on Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Purloined Letter.” Derrida criticizes Lacan’s lecture on Poe’s short story because Lacan’s interpretation of the purloined letter as the phallic signifier aims at the transcendent completion of signification. In Derrida’s view, although the purloined letter’s circulation in the symbolic chain disrupts the imaginary identity of the ego, it eventually completes the totality of the symbolic network. Lacan’s thinking, however, is more aligned with Derrida’s message because Lacan’s views of the letter, object a, the real, and feminine jouissance are structurally similar to Derrida’s notions of différance and iterability. As Derrida’s différance and iterability indicate the impossibility of an essential and transcendent identity and the incessant repetition of alterity, Lacan’s letter of feminine jouissance embodies the structural inconsistency of the symbolic order and the impossibility of the transcendent unity of Meaning. Since they both emphasize the fundamental impossibility of transcendent signification, Lacan’s studies go together with Derrida’s deconstruction.
