특성화고교 대안학교의 운영 현황과 문제점 분석연구 = A Study on the Needs and Problems of Operating Alternative High Schools

The term 'alternative' has been one of the most attention-drawing agenda for the last few years in Korea. In fact, the term 'alternative' is not a new concept at all in the field of education since it has been used for more than several decades all over the world. The impetus for 'alternative' measure originates with the serious concern over the continuinng dilema in the area of public education or school system which presents such a gloomy picture, such as high student dropout rate, low level of student learning achievement, facts-morization oriented learning environment, and so on so forth.The purpose of this study were: to examine the need of alternative schools and educational programs; and, to analyze the situations and the problems of alternative high schools that operationalized under the name of 'demonstration school-specialized high school' since 1998. Various research methods were used to accomplish the study objectives. Extensive literature and statistical data, including web searching, were collected and reviewed, not to mention interviews and expert group meetings.With regard to the results of the study, the need and accountability for providing students with different types of school experience, compared to traditional one, is evidenced clearly by the impressive rate at which innovative alternative schools and alternative programs are emerging all over the world. As evidenced by some schools and programs, alternative school and educational program appears to work and could be beneficial not only to meet the needs of some group of students but to traditional schools as well when employed properly. Some of recommendations are provided.
