헤드라인의 형식과 기능에 관하여 = On Form and Function of Headlines : A Comparative Analysis of Front Page Top News of Korean·English Newspapers

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to compare (contrast) the relationship between the form and the function of Korean Top News Headlines with that of English Top News Headlines. For this research goal, this study first collected Top News Headlines from Joonangilbo (JAIB) and New York Times (NYT), and then classified them according to three categories: Subject, Grammatical pattern, and Functional type. The data analysis implies that (1) both Korean Top News Headlines and English Top News Headlines mainly feature hard news, (2) both Korean Top News Headlines and English Top News Headlines are getting longer, (3) the informative headline tends to omit functional morphemes, while the commentative headline is inclined to include functional morphemes, (4) and JAIB favors the informative headline, while NYT prefers the commentative headline. It is also predicted that the printed paper will have a tendency to take the function of a commenter in the future, while the internet news is taking the function of an information deliverer. This study concluded with some useful implications and interpretations of news headlines.
