Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and Postpostmodernism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

The Road 혹은 두 사람의 여정을 통해, 매카시는 길이 무엇을 의미하는가 하는 의문에 대한 해답을 찾는다. 이들의 여정(the road)은 하나의 여정(a road)이 아니라 삶과 죽음 그리고 선과 악 사이의 진실에 이르는 유일한 길이다. 이 종말 이후 소설에서, ‘한 줄기 빛’이란 종말적 표현은 두 사람에게 일어날 수 있는 다양한 여정과 다양한 결말을 내포한다. 더구나 매카시는 인류가 초래할 자기 파괴적인 실수와 자연의 불확실성이 만들어 낼 수 있는 현재 세계와 종말적 미래를 예견하는 신중한 전략을 구사한다. 종말의 원인이 분명하지 않은 점, 그리고 이항대립과 지시대상의 결여와 같은 포스트모던적 언어 사용은 단어의 의미를 다양화시키며, 종말이전 과거의 기억을 망각하게 한다. 이런 포스트모던적 속성과는 달리, 폐쇄된 배경, 거대서사, 그리고 여성성 같은 모던적 속성이 소설에 담겨 있다. 이와 같이 포스트모던적 현상이 지속되고 가운데, 모던적 현상이 포스트모더니즘이후 새로이 재활성화 된다. 이런 문화적 변화에 나타나듯이, 재활성화된 모더니티로 인해 새로운 문화 현상인 포스트포스트모더니즘이 등장한다. 이러한 새로운 문화 현상을 통해, 매카시는 21세기를 살아가는 인류에게 예언적 경고와 비전을 제시한다

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Through The Road, or the pair’s journey, McCarthy may have found the answer to the question of what the road is. The road, not a road, is the way to reach the truth between life and death, and good and evil. In the post-apocalyptic novel, he depicts the end of the world with ‘a long shear of light’, opening the possible courses of the pair’s journey as well as its possible endings. It is his deliberate strategy of how to present today’s world and its future caused by human errors of self-destruction and natural uncertainties. No definitely known cause of the apocalypse and the postmodern use of language of binarism and referentlessness pluralize the meanings of the words, and cause the human memories of the pre-apocalyptic past to fade away. In contrast to these postmodern attributes, he adopts some modern elements such as the closed setting, metanarratives, and the feminine. While the postmodern phenomena linger on, the modern ones newly revitalized return beyond postmodernism. In this cultural shift, the return of modernity brings in a new cultural trend, postpostmodernism. Thus, in terms of postpostmodern descriptions, he offers a prophetic warning or vision to humanity living in the 21st century.
