공공신학의 관점에서 본 존 칼빈의 신학 = John Calvin’s Theology from a Public Theological Perspective

There has been increasing interest in the issues such as 'the publicity of the church' and 'the role of the church in the public square' among Korean Christians, churches and academics. Indeed, Christians and various research institutes including universities around the world are vigorously discussing these issues through the approach of 'public theology'. Contrariwise, public theological discourses are insufficient in Korea. In particular, conservative Korean church tends to regard public theology as a suspicious approach. However, indeed, when analyzing the structures and contents of public theologies, we will probably realize that there are many sharable points between public theology and reformed theology.
With this in mind, this project examines John Calvin’s life, thoughts and his ministry in Geneva through the hermeneutic lense of public theology. Calvin regarded the traditions of the church as important in advancing his thoughts and appropriately quoted the ideas of the Fathers and ancient philosophers. Furthermore, he tried to explain the principles of the Gospel and faith while making abundant use of humanities, science, and legal knowledge. At the same time, however, he thoroughly set the standard of his life and thoughts on the basis of Sola Scriptura. It should be emphasized that he worked not only for religious reform but also for social reform. This emphasis comes from his suggestion of an appropriate direction based on Christian faith toward politics and society for the common good. He always did not hesitate to speak up a prophetic voice. He interacted with and influenced theologians from other regions, and his theology transcends time and space, and is still influential all over the world.
By presenting the Reformer, John Calvin, as a model of public theologian, this project will provide a new perspective to the discourse of public theology that is being discussed today. In addition, the discovery of the intersection between Calvin's theological thought and public theology will urge the Korean Reformed church's correct understanding of public theology. To do so, the Korean church will provide people inside the church with the ability to respond to social issues and contribute to people outside the church by presenting the moral direction based on the gospel.
