조선후기형 복원 거북선의 현황과 제언 = The Current State of and Proposals for Restored Late Joseon-Style Turtle Ships

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글에서 조사·분석한 조선후기형 복원 거북선은 구조와 형태적 측면에서 보면 전라좌수영거북선형과 통제영거북선형으로 대별할 수 있었다. 이 거북선들의 특징은 대부분 조선후기와 임란시 거북선 관련 기록을 복합적으로 적용한 혼합형이었으며, 일부 구조에서는 복원의 근거를 알 수 없는 경우도 있었다. 이러한 사실들을 바탕으로 향후 조선후기형 거북선 복원시 유념해야 할 사항 몇 가지를 제언하였다. 우선 거북선을 복원할 때에는 어떤 거북선을 복원할 것인가에 대한 목표 설정이 분명해야 한다는 것을 언급하였다. 예컨대 임진왜란형 또는 조선후기형 등으로, 조선후기형 중에서도 소속(수군영·진)과 시기 등을 정확히 설정해야 한다는 것이 그것이다. 다음으로 통제영거북선과 전라좌수영거북선의 크기를 동일하게 복원해서는 안된다는 것이다. 조선후기 거북선은 크기, 형태, 구조 등이 수군영·진은 물론이고 시기에 따라 다르게 나타나기 때문이다. 셋째, 거북선 복원이 완료되면 운항이 가능한지 여부를 확인할 필요가 있다는 것을 언급하였다. 넷째, 층 구조에 대한 부분은 권수 도설 중 포판과 관련된 기록을 정확히 파악하고 복원에 임해야 한다는 것이다. 다섯째, 신방과 방패의 연결 구조에 대한 것이다. 이것은 권수도설에 나타난 신방과 방패의 연결 구조가 수직선상에 있었다는 사실을 각별히 유념할 필요가 있다고 언급하였다. 여섯째, 노에 대한 부분이다. 현재 복원된 노의 구조와 크기로는 추동력 등이 원활하지 않다는 사실 등을 언급한 후 향후 복원 시에는 다양한 각도에서 고증이 이루어져야 한다는 것을 제언하였다. 일곱째, 거북선 복원시 관련 기록을 자의적으로 해석하거나 훼손시켜서는 안되며, 사실 그대로 적용해야 한다고 하였다. 여덟째, 돛대를 보관하는 구조와 움직임에 대한 부분을 언급하였다. 마지막으로 거북선 건조 재료에 대한 것과 거북선 주요치수에 대한 부분을 제언하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Late Joseon-style restored Turtle Ships examined and analyzed in the present study were mainly categorized into Jeolla Jwasuyeong- and Tongjeyeong -style Turtle Ships in the structure and form aspects. One of the characteristics of these Turtle Ships is that they were in a mixed form based on the complex application of Turtle Ship records from the latter part of Joseon and Imjinwaeran in most cases. In some structures, it was impossible to trace grounds for restoration. Based on these facts, the study discussed issues with the restoration of late Joseon-style Turtle Ships along with a couple of notes. First, it is important to set a clear goal regarding a Turtle Ship style to be restored. For instance, a choice can be made between the Imjinwaeran and late Joseon styles. Under each style, it is critical to set the affiliation(Sugunyeong and Jin) and time of Turtle Ship accurately. Second, it is important not to restore Tongjeyeong- and Jeolla Jwasuyeong-style Turtle Ships in the same size as Turtle Ships varied in size, form, and structure according to the time as well as Sugunyeong and Jin during the latter part of Joseon. Third, there is a need to check whether a restored Turtle Ship can sail after the restoration process is over. Fourth, it is necessary to examine Popan records in Gwonsu Doseol accurately before restoring a Turtle Ship for its layer structure. Fifth, there is a need to pay extra attention to the vertical connective structure between Sinbang and shield in Gwonsu Doseol. Sixth, the study pointed out that the current restored oars provide no enough driving force for a Turtle Ship in their structure and size and proposed to investigate oars at multiple angles based on historical evidence. Seventh, no arbitrary interpretations and damages of records are allowed in the restoration of Turtle Ships. It is important to apply records as they are. Eighth, the study mentioned the storage structures and movements of masts. Finally, the study made proposals about the shipbuilding materials and major measurements of Turtle Ships.
