첨성대를 어떻게 볼 것인가 - 첨성대 해석의 역사와 신라시대의 천문관 = The Role of the Cheomseongdae and the Astronomical View of the Silla Dynasty

This article aims to compare and analyze the previous interpretations of the Cheomseongdae in order to present more plausible one. I divide them into three groups: the first is the traditional view that the Cheomseongdae was the astronomical observatory; the second is the revisionist view that the Cheomseongdae might be used for other purposes rather than an observatory; and the third is an effort to assimilate these two. I systematically analyze why three different interpretations emerged in different periods and how they were accepted and refuted. I'll argue that the role of the Cheomseongdae must be analyzed and understood not only from the view of the Silla Dynasty when it was built but also from the point of view of wider context, i.e., from the point of view of the development of East Asian astronomy. As a result, I think that Cheomseongdae was the holy place to carefully watch the heavenly world.
