백동소재의 주전자 제작 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사전적 정의에 의하면 공예란 ‘기능과 장식의 양면을 조화시켜 일상생활에 필요한 물건을 만드는 일’ 을 의미한다.

산업 기술력의 발전에 따라 현대공예는 ‘쓰임(기능)’보다는 ‘조형(장식)’으로서의 역할이 커지고 있으며, 일상생활에 흔히 사용되는 산업제품만큼 활발히 사용된다고 보기 힘들다. 기능이 있는 공예품이 사용이 불편하다거나 취약하다는 등의 이유로 잘 사용되어지지 않는다는 것은 존재의미가 퇴색되는 일이다.

이와 같은 이유로 본 연구의 가장 큰 목적을 ‘ 공예품이 가지는 조형성을 유지하면서, 기능적 형상의 탐구와 내구성 강화 등 실용적 측면을 보완하는 것’에 두었다. 제작기물의 선정은 기능과 장식의 조화를 효과적으로 드러낼 수 있는 주전자로 정하였고, 주 재료는 ‘백동(Cupronickel)’으로 정하였다. 주전자의 실용성을 높이기 위하여 기성품 조사 및 연구를 진행하며, 그 결과를 토대로 기능을 해치지 않는 범위 내에서의 형상탐구를 진행한다. 또한 성형기법의 난이도별로 순차적 연구를 진행하여 백동의 가공성에 대한 실험을 병행하고자 한다.

백동을 소재로 이용하였을 경우, 보다 견고한 기물의 제작이 가능하다는 장점이 있으며, 이러한 특성으로 인해 호텔 등의 은도금 식기나 커틀러리의 소재로 활용되고 있다. 사용되어지는 사물이라는 전제하에 견고함이란 공예품이 가져야할 중용한 덕목 중 하나이며, 때문에 백동소재를 수작업을 통한 성형으로 조형적 기물로 제작하는 행위는 충분한 가치가 있다고 판단하였다.

해당 논문에는 백동과 관련하여 조사된 자료들과 개인적 경험에 의한 내용이 포함되어있다. 객관적으로 기술하기 위하여 노력하였으나 절대적인 기준이 아님을 사전에 밝히며, 백동소재를 사용하여 작업하고자 하는 이들에게 작은 도움이나마 되었으면 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The dictionary definition of craft is, ‘Harmonize the function and decoration, then make products for our everyday life.’
The link between function and decoration is included ‘both-side’ And the definition of ‘both side’ and ‘opposite side’ is not synonyms. but I’m sure it’s very hard to harmonize them together.

According to the development of industrial technology, modern craft is getting close to the category of arts. they have function but it’s hard to consider as ‘well-used industrial products’ As the functional arts and crafts are thought to be uncomfortable and weak points, they are not widely used. But I think it is essentially beside the point.
Thus, I tried to make accessible work for user. because I thought it’s very close to make people use it smoothly.

Thus, the main purpose of this research is ‘to sustain formativeness while pursuing practicality comparable to mass-produced products’
The items chosen for the research are kettles as they can effectively display harmony between practicality and decorativeness.
As I believe that the biggest differences and advantages of artefacts are the materials and solidity compared to mass-produced ones’ practicality, ‘Cupronickel’ was chosen for the material for the thesis artwork.
The research will be carried out on mass-produced products to study the shapes of practical kettles.
Simultaneously, an experiment on white copper’s workability will be done in order of difficulties of different production methods.

Practically, it can be seen as an impractical work, when you consider the contrast between worktime, effectiveness and value of goods besides making practical products.
This study is made according to subjective reason about essence of craft. I hope the result of this study can help people who do ‘Craft’
