This research aimed to examine the changing role of the traditional courtyard Madang space in modern Korean architecture. With its focus on the urban redevelopment project of Ikseon-dong Hanok village, an analysis of transformation of space patterns, as well as functional and technical implications of modification efforts has been done. As a result, study showed the changes in the courtyard sizes, altered proportions, limited natural light, and broken connection between architecture, human, and city which compromised architectural authenticity of the area. These changes emphasize a need to re-evaluate the significance of the courtyard space to preserve continuity use in heritage-based urban renewal projects.
