Cultural exchange is a wide definition of mutual sharing of information, mostly cultural, between two or more people or countries for the purpose of improving peaceful friendship and understanding between each other. Yet, Korea and Mongolia’s exchange are unilateral or unbalanced meaning the influence from Korea is dominant, which brings up the question of whether this Korean wave phenomenon is, in reality, a cultural dominance rather than a mutual exchange.
The importance of this study is to further understand the different aspects of Hallyu in Mongolia and its implications. Criticizing the “Hallyu” as excessively profit-oriented, extremely capitalist and overly commercialized by analyzing to a certain degree, the negative aspects in Mongolia. This study analyses the current status of the “Hallyu” contents in Mongolia. Through analyzing the negative aspect of influences of the Korean wave in Mongolia, this study expresses a critical point of view.
As a result, the characteristic of Hallyu culture which causes the most controversy is that Hallyu is more of an economic product rather than a purely cultural phenomenon. With a fast-paced penetration, Korean wave industries are capitalists with the sole purpose of profit. Exploiting foreign markets and creating a one-sided exchange of culture and money should not be tolerated. Government involvement and investments should be better regulated to create a healthy and peaceful relationship of exchange between countries. Also, for future recommendations, this research suggests improved cultural exchanges and collaboration among countries as a means to foster the hybrid culture of Hallyu.
