Hardiness, the personality character, composed of the concepts of control, commitment, and challenge, has been inquired as an inherent health promoting and/or mediating factor recently, even when confronted with a stressful environment.
While findings form hardiness studies made a significant contribution to stress research, relevance to the nursing professional was limited due to theoretical concerns about the relationship between generic hardiness and health, lack of empirical support for the effect of hardiness on adaptation to health problems.
Therefore, this study is purposed to find out the feasibility of adopting the concept of hardiness as one of the stress reducing intervention for the chronic patients.
To this end, the analysis of the hardiness concept and it's relationship to the state of adaptation of hemiplegic patient was done with the underlying assumption that the state of adaptation is influenced by individual hardiness character.
The state of adaptation of the hemiplegic patients has been operationalized as the degree of dependency for Activities of Daily Living indicating the physical adaptation, the degree of depression indicating the psychological adaptation and the amount of the Social Activities indicating the social adaptation at 3-month after their hostigpalization.
Three hypothesis was formulated to test the possible correlation between the hardiness character and the hardiness character and the physical-psychological-social adaptation of the hemiplegic patients at three-month after their hospitalization.
The data were collected twice. Sevently three subjects at predischarge period and forty three subjects at 3-months after hospitalization were interviewed and observed with the measuring instruments of health related hardiness, ADL dependency, self depression scale and the check list of social activities. The data obtained were analysed using percentage, oneway ANOVA and Pearson coefficient correlation, and the findings are summarized as follows.
Three null hypothesis were tested and two of them were rejected and one was supported, indicating the hardiness character was significantly related to the physical and social adaptation and was not significantly related to the psychological adaptation of hemiplegic patients at post-discharge from hospital.
The significant of this study is to :
    1. Demonstrate the concept of hardiness as an positive mediating variable in the study of the stress-response process of the chronic patients.
    2. Support for the feasibility of the cognitive approach such as hardiness training or counseling for promotion of the adaptation state of the chronic patients.
    3. Need for further study of systematic approach to clinical research and development of nursing intervention on hardiness research.
