｢이화전｣에 나타난 능력의 문제 = The Problem of Ability as Revealed in “Ihwa-jeon(이화전)”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 ｢이화전｣(李華傳)의 본질을 ‘능력의 문제’를 핵심적으로 다루는 작품으로 규정한다. 작품은 여우를 퇴치하는 사건을 중심으로 전개되며, 초월적 존재의 힘과 인간의 능력이 대결하는 구조를 통해 ‘능력’의 본질을 탐색한다. 이화는 관리(官吏)들을 통제할 수 있는 권위를 지닌 인물로 설정되며, 인간의 생명을위협하는 여우의 의지를 제거함으로써 사회적으로 승인된 위상을 획득한다. 본연구는 이러한 서사 전개를 능력의 사회적 범주와 성립 조건의 문제로 파악하고, ｢이화전｣이 특정한 사회적 상황 속에서 인물에게 능력이 요구되고 검증되는 과정을 형상화하고 있다고 본다. 특히 작품은 물리적 힘이나 정치적 성공이 아니라인간으로서 지녀야 할 도덕적 정당성과 올바름을 능력의 근본 조건으로 제시함으로써, 능력이란 무엇인가라는 질문을 제기하고 그에 대한 서사적 응답을 제시한다. 또한, 능력의 문제가 직접적이고 현실적인 차원에서 표출되지 못하고 간접적·환상적 방식으로 표현된 점은, 능력에 대한 사회적 발언이 당대 현실에서 직면할 수밖에 없었던 제도적 제약과 저항을 반영한다는 점에서 의미를 지닌다. 이는 환상 서사를 매개로 사회 현실에 대해 우회적으로 발언하고자 한 전략적 선택으로 이해될 수 있다.

This paper defines "Ihwa-jeon" (李華傳) as a work that fundamentally addresses the "question of ability." The story unfolds around the story of a fox slaying, exploring the nature of "ability" through a structure that pits the power of a transcendent being against human ability. Yi Hwa is established as a figure with authority over government officials, and by eliminating the fox's will, which threatens human life, she gains socially recognized status. This study interprets this narrative development as a question of the social category and conditions of competence, arguing that "Ihwa-jeon" embodies the process by which competence is demanded and tested within a specific social context. Specifically, by presenting the fundamental condition of competence as moral legitimacy and righteousness, rather than physical strength or political success, the work raises the question of what ability is and offers a narrative response to this question.
Furthermore, the fact that the issue of ability is not expressed directly and realistically, but rather indirectly and in a fantastical way, is significant in that it reflects the institutional constraints and resistance that social discourse on ability inevitably faced in contemporary reality. This can be understood as a strategic choice to indirectly address social reality through a fantasy narrative.
