This study examines the current state of College of Education in Korea and suggests directions for their improvement as the institution dedicated to educating future teachers of secondary schools.
The following points are suggested as what is generally needed with College of Education in the country :
1. They should set educational goal and philosophy more clearly in training students to become secondary school teachers;
2. They need to develop new programs to enchance their educational professionalism;
3. It is time for general review of their currculums and administration ;
4. And also urgently required is a new approach to activate them with expanded and improved professional roles.
Specifically with regard to the national system for producing teachers, this study calls for reorganization in the following direction :
1. The current system of giving priority to national university in teacher's education should be maintained ;
2. Teacher's colleges at private universities, excepting for a few with competent professional programs, need be converted to non-educational colleges ;
3. Teachers, programs administered at other colleges should be recined, except for the courses not offered at College of Education ;
4. Prudent and far-sighted reform measures should be taken with nation-wide consultation with opinions of professionals and specialists in education.
